Anxiety Therapy in Calgary (NW)

Compassionate, nervous-system–informed therapy for adults in Calgary and NW Calgary

When Your System Is Always on Alert

A deer standing still in a forest, ears alert and body poised, reflecting what it feels like when your nervous system is always on guard.

Anxiety can feel like living with a mind that never truly rests. Thoughts loop. Worries pile up. Your body may feel tense, wired, or constantly on edge. Even in moments that should feel calm, something inside remains alert—scanning for what could go wrong.

You might tell yourself you’re “overthinking” or “too sensitive,” yet your system doesn’t seem to listen. You may long for quiet—for ease, for a sense of being able to breathe again.

Anxiety is not a personal failure. It is a signal from your nervous system—evidence that something inside you is working very hard to keep you safe.

At Connect Heal Grow Psychology, I offer anxiety therapy for adults in Calgary, grounded in compassion, pacing, and deep respect for your inner world. My work is trauma-informed, body-aware, and gently guided by the understanding that different parts of you carry different roles, fears, and hopes. Therapy is collaborative, steady, and attuned to your nervous system.

When Your Mind Won’t Slow Down

Anxiety often feels like an internal alarm that won’t switch off. You may notice:

  • Constant worry or mental spirals
  • Difficulty relaxing or sleeping
  • A tight chest or shallow breath
  • Feeling “on edge” for no clear reason
  • A sense that something bad is about to happen

Many people experience anxiety as an inner voice that is always preparing, warning, or bracing. It might sound like:

“What if this goes wrong?”

“You should be doing more.”

“Don’t mess this up.”

This part of you isn’t trying to make your life harder. It is trying to protect you. Somewhere along the way, your system learned that staying alert was necessary—that anticipating danger, staying prepared, or thinking everything through helped keep you safe.

That vigilance once made sense. It just may no longer be serving you now.

How Anxiety Actually Works

Anxiety doesn’t begin in your thoughts—it begins in your nervous system.

First, your system senses something that feels uncertain, threatening, or overwhelming. This often happens beneath conscious awareness. Your body shifts into protection: your heart rate changes, muscles tense, breathing becomes shallow, and attention narrows.

Only then does your mind step in.

Your thoughts—What if this goes wrong? What did I forget? I can’t mess this up—are not the cause of anxiety. They are your mind’s attempt to make sense of what your body is already feeling. Thinking becomes a way to prepare, prevent, and protect.

In other words:

  • Your nervous system detects risk

  • Your body moves into survival mode

  • An inner voice begins scanning, planning, and warning

This is why “just think positively” rarely helps. The part of you that is worrying isn’t being irrational—it’s responding to a body that already feels unsafe.

In therapy, we work with the whole system. We help your body learn that it is safe in the present moment, and we build a compassionate relationship with the part of you that stays alert. When your nervous system begins to settle, your thoughts naturally soften too.

You might notice this most clearly when you finally have time to rest.

You go on vacation. The pressure lifts. There is nothing urgent to do. And yet—you can’t relax. Your mind keeps scanning. Your body stays tense. You feel restless, wired, or strangely flat.

This isn’t a failure on your part.

It speaks to a nervous system that has been “on” for a long time and doesn’t yet know it is safe to come down. When your system has learned that staying alert is what keeps you safe, stillness can feel unfamiliar—or even threatening.

Your body isn’t doing this to you. It’s doing this for you.

In therapy, we help your system slowly learn that it no longer has to stay braced. Safety becomes something you can feel, not just understand. And with that, rest begins to feel possible again.

You Are Not Broken

Anxiety does not mean something is wrong with you. It means your nervous system adapted in a world that, at times, felt uncertain, demanding, or unsafe. A part of you learned that staying watchful was the best way to survive. These anxious patterns are not flaws. They are survival strategies. Therapy is not about getting rid of the anxious part of you. It’s about helping it feel less alone in its work—so you no longer have to live in constant tension.

My Approach to Anxiety Therapy

Anxiety is not just a “symptom”—it is a survival response. When a pattern is anchored to safety, it doesn’t simply disappear because you decide you want something different. Anything tied to your sense of survival will naturally feel risky to change.

In therapy, we honor that.

We don’t try to silence the anxious part of you. We get curious about it. We listen for what it is protecting and what it fears might happen if it were to relax. Change becomes possible not through pressure, but through understanding—when your system begins to feel that safety no longer depends on constant vigilance.

I work from a trauma-informed, somatic, and Internal Family Systems (IFS)–informed perspective. Together, we:

Learning How Anxiety Lives in Your Body

Anxiety isn’t just something you think—it’s something your body feels. In therapy, we explore how stress, fear, and vigilance show up in your nervous system so your experiences begin to make sense rather than feel confusing or shameful. This awareness helps your system feel understood, not judged.

Building a Connection and Relationship to the Present Moment

Anxiety pulls you into what might happen next. Together, we gently strengthen your capacity to be here, now—so your body can begin to sense that the danger is not happening in this moment. Presence isn’t forced; it grows as your system feels safer...

Developing Safety with the Parts of You That Stay on Guard

The part of you that worries is trying to protect you. We meet it with curiosity and respect, learning what it fears and what it’s carrying. As that part feels less alone, it no longer has to work quite so hard—and space opens for ease and choice.

The Role of Relationship in Healing

Change happens in relationship and connection with another. Anxiety often formed in moments when you had to manage on your own. Healing happens when your system experiences being met, understood, and not alone.

In the early stages of anxiety therapy, attending sessions regularly can help your nervous system learn that support can be steady and predictable. This isn’t about doing therapy “right.” It’s about giving your system enough continuity to begin trusting that it doesn’t have to stay on high alert.

Frequently Asked Questions

Private practice psychological services are not covered by Alberta Health Care. Many private benefit plans and health spending accounts, however, do provide coverage for services offered by Registered Psychologists.

Because every plan is different, I recommend checking directly with your benefits provider to understand what your specific coverage includes.

Yes. My office is located in NW Calgary and is easily accessible for clients from communities such as Brentwood, Varsity, Dalhousie, Tuscany, Rocky Ridge, Arbour Lake, and surrounding areas. I also offer virtual sessions for clients across Alberta.

That makes sense. For many people, anxiety formed early as a way of staying safe in an unpredictable world. It may feel like “just who I am.” Therapy isn’t about erasing a part of you—it’s about helping your nervous system learn that it no longer has to stay on high alert. Change can happen even when anxiety has been with you for a very long time.

My rate is $235 for a 60-minute session.  I understand that financial situations can vary, so I offer a limited number of sliding scale spots to make therapy more accessible. While this option is based on financial need, please note that it is not guaranteed for everyone and depends on my current availability for sliding scale clients. If you’re interested, we can discuss this further during our consultation to explore what might be possible.

No. Anxiety is not a failure of mindset—it’s a nervous system response. We don’t ask your anxious part to disappear or argue with it. We listen for what it’s protecting and help your system feel safer in the present moment. When your body begins to settle, your thoughts naturally soften too.

You don’t need to have it figured out. Many anxious responses happen beneath conscious awareness. Together, we gently explore how your body signals danger, what it learned long ago, and what it needs now. Insight grows alongside safety.

Yes. Many people with anxiety are high-functioning and capable. The struggle isn’t always visible. Therapy is a place where you don’t have to hold it together—where we listen to what your system has been carrying, even when everything appears okay from the outside.
